Press Release: ARIZONA FOR ABORTION ACCESS ACT ONE STEP CLOSER TO THE BALLOT

Campaign will file official initiative language soon after today’s advisory from the Legislative Council

PHOENIX, AZ — Late yesterday, the Legislative Council issued its review of the “Arizona for Abortion Access Act,” a proposed ballot initiative that would amend the state constitution with an explicit right to abortion.

The review is a significant milestone for the ballot initiative campaign. The campaign now will consider changes to the amendment language as recommended by the Legislative Council before filing with the Secretary of State. Once the Secretary of State assigns a serial number to the ballot initiative, the campaign can begin gathering signatures to put abortion on the ballot in 2024.

Statement from Chris Love, spokesperson for Arizona for Abortion Access:

“Today, Arizona for Abortion Access is one step closer to putting our constitutional amendment on the ballot in 2024. While we have a ways to go, we are acting with necessary urgency: This winter, the Arizona Supreme Court will hear a case that could fully reinstate a near-total abortion ban from more than a century ago. The majority of Arizonans believe that people deserve to make decisions about when and if to start a family without government interference. It’s time for us to make sure Arizona’s constitution reflects the values of the twenty-first century, not the nineteenth. We look forward to launching the next stage of our campaign to protect abortion in Arizona.”
